JAPAN NATIONAL STADIUM
Japan will be home for the 2020 Summer Olympics, and for this reason they have invested in the stadium that will replace the existing national stadium in Tokyo. The current design is by the architect Kengo Kuma and the stadium is currently in construction.
I decided to create my own design for the existing site as if I myself were the architect.

BRAINSTORMING
After studying the site, I started out by sketching ideas of forms that would encompass the space best in respect to the area.
The oval shape structure in the site plan towards the left is the existing stadium. With this I brought out my ideas with my sketchbook and began to draw. I started with structure as the backbone to keep in mind when drawing and as I drew I iterated multiple times until I came across an idea that was fitting for what I thought would take place in the site. |
ORGANIZATION
I started listing all of the necessities that would take place or be needed for the building and this came along with ADA requirements, structural integrity, and flow of traffic throughout the stadium. I added elements ranging from elevator shafts, access to different vehicles and transport, to bathrooms, and galleries.
These allocations were made as an idea as to where everything might be, but as the entire system is much too complicated, I resorted to allowing for massive interior spaces that might be up to interpretation as to where certain things would go.
DRAFTING
As I was putting together more concrete ideas, I started to reapply these ideas back onto the site plan and bring the structure to life. With the ideas of the style I wanted to portray and with reference to the site, I started with tiny models and drawings expressing what the stadium would look like.
Part of the design process was, however, building the model. This was something I was leaving for last, because I didn't want to have my iterative process become reliant on the models, that would be too time consuming. But, I still collected my building materials in the end and used the "building block" approach to design as a finishing touch to the project.
After calculating the actual size of the stadium and in respect, finding a matching scale, I set out and started to build, starting with the 1st level concourse, moving to the second, and finishing with the roof structure.

THE MODEL
The final model wasn't fully constructed on purpose to expose some of the interior elements. I also revealed parts of the building that were hidden, but still symmetrical on the other side to get a better understanding of the stadium.
