READING ROOM
The reading room is a place where you can immerse yourself in a visual and peaceful experience of light play and dynamic energy.
Ribbon like combination of concrete slabs, wood, and glass.
The idea of the room was to create a "nook" building. Almost something that could pass as an architectural folly.
The simple building could fit in and act as an "in between" space for college students or commuters. The angles of the walls are all dynamic and there is no clear "protrusion" or expansion of a certain diagrammatic floor plan. There is a playful use of different types of glass throughout the space and it creates for an interesting use of shadows and light that can be seen to the right. |
CONSTRUCTION
The walls would start out with the site-cast concrete that are set at angles off of the ground.
The good thing about the on site cast concrete is that we can create the mold with angle in the beginning and have a smooth pour. Until the concrete dries, there will be supports to hold the concrete in its place at the set angle. Then comes the aluminum tracks for the glass, and joints for the ribbon wood slabs. |

The entire space is an energetic yet peaceful composition of different materials. However, these materials are composed in a way that they all speak the same language and match. Even the uses of glass differ. The roof of the nook is made of a half section of frosted glass to control the severity of the natural light that might be coming in directly to the top of the building.

However, the wall of one side of the reading room is a clear glass as can be seen in the right picture. The left picture shows the frosted roof glass.
The slit that is also part of the roof contains smaller clear glass strips that lets different types of light to be allowed into the area. |
