BUTTERFLY CAFE at duck pond, Virginia Tech
A coffee shop where butterflies roam and fly within an atrium.
Mornings are for coffee and contemplation. Walking around the duck pond with fresh air and relaxing in a pavilion for coffee in the midst of nature. I present, the Butterfly Cafe.

The idea was thought of when I was walking one morning and noticed an abundance of butterflies near the creek that led to the duck pond. And in a clearing there was a good spot for where I thought you could fit a small little coffee shop. And from then, I went out and started drawing. It would contain an atrium, an incubator for the butterflies, a coffee bar, seating areas, and fresh breeze that would capture and occupy the space. |
ROOM SPECIFICATIONS AND FLOOR PLANS
The cafe needed a certain set of rooms that served different purposes to have it properly run as a coffee shop or atrium on the other hand. I started mapping these ideas.
The necessities were ruled out as - Cafe (with station, sink, coffee machine) - Restroom (single) - Storages / freezer room - Vestibules / air-locks - Attrium - Incubator - Two offices for management and care - Outdoor seating area *Layout displayed on right |

The design incorporates a big use of glass, along with wooden structure to provide a more natural feel that could relate to the scenario of the duck pond and the trees that surround it.
DESIGN ISSUES
The entrance was a big deal for the entire cafe in my perspective. I wanted to create a portal sense of openness and a flow of air that would drift throughout the building.
I wanted to make the person who would go to something like this feel like they were in a new biome.
Almost like being outside, but somehow putting yourself into a new atmosphere or new environment that was somehow sheltered from real life, but still symbolizing the beauty of your surroundings. The dynamic use of wooden beams laterally and vertically were made to create a sense of sheared space where natural sunlight could filter its way in and create a shadow play. |
Here is a set of details in the rest of the butterfly cafe. The model was done in an eighth scale: - 1 foot :: 1/8th in. |
